First thing: I don’t intend to make this newsletter my livelihood. (It’s not that kind of Substack.) I have a job at KQED that I love, etc. Also, there are many thousands of you who signed up for this newsletter in its different iterations, and it’s always been free.
Second thing: The vision for Oakland Garden Club is to be the economic engine for publishing interesting ideas about plants in different forms. Paying writers and artists requires some money.
Third thing: That money, I hope, comes (primarily) from selling physical things: streetwear and tiny books. But, right this second, we’re getting going. There are no things to buy yet. And perhaps you would like to support bringing this project into full flower.
Conclusion: This newsletter will remain free, but I’m going to make paid subscriptions available. That money will go towards realizing the Oakland Garden Club vision. Beyond my commitment to keep the actual content free and open, consider this a living document. I suspect, in the future, there will be a true membership available to get the books and special releases.
